Guidelines


1. The Research Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (RIHSS) enacts the following guidelines for the applications for international visiting Ph.D. candidates.


2. Eligibility: 

(1) International Ph.D. candidates enrolled in international academic institutions (the institutions shall be included in the reference list issued by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan (R.O.C.)).

(2) Research proposals shall be related to the humanities and social sciences.


3. Application Periods:

Applications are accepted on all year around and shall be received at least four months prior to the beginning of the proposed date of visit.


4. Submissions shall include the following items:

(1) Application form

(2) A certificate of enrollment (which proves the applicant is still enrolled during the visit)

(3) A research proposal

(4) A color photocopy of passport

(5) A letter of recommendation in English or Chinese from applicants' advisor of home academic institution.

(6) A letter of recommendation in English or Chinese from a Taiwan-based scholar.


5. Applications are reviewed based on applicants' past experience, research proposal, and space availability at RIHSS.


6. The period of stay for each visit shall be between one month and 180 days.


7. All international visiting Ph.D. candidates need to pay an administrative fee to National Taiwan University. The payment scheme is as follows.

8. RIHSS offers international visiting Ph.D. candidates the following services: 

(1) Office space 

(2) Computer and internet service 

(3) Access to National Taiwan University Library 

(4) Information on academic events in Taiwan 

(5) Housing information 

(6) Certificate of visiting


9. The guidelines are effective upon the announcement after the approval of RIHSS Executive Committee.

Application Notice

1. Eligibility:

(1)  International Ph.D. candidates enrolled in international academic institutions (the institutions shall be included in the reference list issued by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan (R.O.C.)).

(2)  Research proposals shall be related to the humanities and social sciences.


2. Application Periods:

(1)  Applicants who need to apply for a visa: 

Applications shall be received at least four months prior to the beginning of the proposed date of visit. The period of stay for each visit shall be between one month and 180 days (due to visa regulations, the duration may not exceed 180 days).

(2)  Applicants who have an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) or a valid visa in Taiwan:

Applications shall be received at least three months prior to the beginning of the proposed date of visit. The period of stay for each visit shall be between one month and 180 days. If necessary, it may be extended.


3. Submissions shall include the following items:

(1)  Application form

(2)  A certificate of enrollment (which proves the applicant is still enrolled during the visit)

(3)  A research proposal

(4)  A color photocopy of passport

(5)  A letter of recommendation in English or Chinese from applicants' advisor of home academic institution.

(6)  A letter of recommendation in English or Chinese from a Taiwan-based scholar.


4. After applicants have been accepted by RIHSS and obtain the consent letter of RIHSS host professor, they must upload documents to the online application system of Office of International Affairs (OIA), NTU (for more information, please refer to the OIA website).

(1)  Applicants who need to apply for a visa:

After obtaining the approval of NTU, applicants will receive a notice e-mail that contains an invitation letter from NTU and a consent letter from Taiwan Ministry of Education one month prior to their arrival.

(2)  Applicants who have an ARC or a valid visa in Taiwan:

After obtaining the approval of NTU, applicants will receive a notice e-mail one month prior to their arrival.


5. Visa: 

(1)  International applicants: 

Please apply for a Visitor Visa in your country of residence before entering Taiwan. Please contact Taiwan's embassies/consulates/ representative offices in your country/region.

(2)  Mainland Chinese applicants: 

Mainland Chinese students' entry permit must be applied by NTU. Please upload the entry permit application form to the OIA online application system.

(3)  Hong Kong and Macao applicants: 

Please apply for an entry permit on your own if you are not a People's Republic of China national.

(4)  If applicants are already in Taiwan and hold an ARC or a valid visa, their visiting period must be within the validity period of the visa or ARC. RIHSS and NTU are unable to assist in extending visa or changing visa type.


6. Administrative fee:

All applicants need to pay an administrative fee to NTU. The payment scheme is as follows. The first payment is an application fee, which is a one-time, non-refundable payment. The second payment is paid upon arrival. Please note that the administrative fee does not include the cost of living or accommodation.

7. NTU on-campus housing:

(1)  There are Guo-Qing Dorm (International Youth Center) and General Dorms available for visiting students. However, due to the limited number of rooms, on-campus housing is NOT always available for visiting students. Please see the OIA online application system for the available choices.

(2)  Please note that NTU provides on-campus housing only during the visiting period. Visitors are responsible for their own accommodation for early arrival and late departure. Please visit the accommodation section of the OIA website for detailed information on dormitories and off-campus accommodation.
