Intellectual History of the Qing Dynasty and Modern Era, Academic Practices and Academic Information Management from the 19th to 20th Century, Confucianism and Political Action

My doctoral dissertation focuses on the relationship between Confucian thought and political action, which is demonstrated in the 19th-century Neo-Confucians' conservative "ordering the world" thoughts and practices. Currently, I am extending my research to the "academic practices" and "academic information management" of the 19th century. From these two projects, I explore how 20th-century scholars confronted the academic heritage and issues inherited from the Qing Dynasty. My works have been published in New History, Intellectual History, and the Bulletin of Academia Historica.

Formal Epistemology, Social Epistemology, Philosophy of Science

How should individuals respond upon receiving information from others? Addressing this question necessitates clarifying several concepts in contemporary epistemology, including testimony, disagreement, reliability, and higher-order evidence. Additionally, it requires analyzing various methods of belief revision and assessing them based on their respective characteristics. To achieve this objective, I undertake an in-depth analysis of pertinent epistemological issues and subsequently reformulate the relevant concepts using formal tools such as probability theory, decision theory, and game theory. Upon completing this foundational work, I employ these formal tools to derive normative results, which serve as a basis for evaluating different methods of belief revision.

My doctoral thesis focuses on the transformation of agricultural method in Taiwan over the past three decades and the emerging social networks it has shaped at the local level. At the same time, it is pointed out that when the national system is under the pressure of global liberalized trade, and is eager to gradually cancel the public grain policy. The "extensive" and "refined" routes led by the policy, not only caused the agricultural land rent competition, but also due to the trend of marketization, accelerate the speed of rural differentiation. The current focus is on the possible impact of agricultural land carbon credit as an emerging exchange value/right on the issues of farmers, rural areas and agriculture.

Timothy’s Ph.D. research was on sustainable food systems and centered on edible insects. It involved an interdisciplinary approach and employed participatory action research. His focus was on the integration of the agricultural, gastronomical, and social production of insects as food specializing in a the Taiwanese native cricket species Gryllus bimaculatus.  His ongoing interest lies with the sociology of food, specifically reflexive food modernity, gastro(a)nomie, biopolitics of food, and edibility formation. His field of engagement lies in the social movements and discourses entangled with alternative proteins, novel foods, green-, low-carbon-, and sustainable diets as well as Slow Food. He is member of the Taiwan Edible Insects Industry Association and co-founder and director of the research project C.Canteen, which is featured by the Humanities for the Environment, Asia-Pacific Observatory.

他相當關注食品社會學,尤其是”reflexive food modernity”, “gastro(a)nomie”, “biopolitics of food”, 與 “edibility formation”。
